Verizon
Campaign Update, Show Archive
November 16, 2004
The
archive of yesterday's show, Verizon
Campaign: Avalanche of Protest and Media Coverage,
can be heard here.
The show actually dealt with a variety of topics--I discussed
the Verizon
campaign in the first segment.
Verizon has contacted us and the situation regarding the controversial ad
is under review. We will inform you as events progress.
Thanks
again to the thousands of you who have participated in
our campaign--with your help our efforts have been reported
on by over 300 media outlets, including CNN, Fox News,
ABC, NBC, CBS, Sinclair Broadcasting, USA Today,
the Associated Press, UPI, the Boston Globe, Newsday,
the U.K. Guardian and countless others.
I
suggest that His
Side listeners write letters to the editors of
the newspapers that have covered our campaign in order
to better take our case to the public. The e-mail addresses
of two dozen of those newspapers can be found here.
Our
efforts have drawn criticism both from feminists and from
male traditionalists. The National Organization for Women
has voiced displeasure with our campaign. Kim Gandy, president
of NOW, told the Associated Press that NOW still receives
many complaints about ads denigrating women and said "Ads
that portray women insensitively are ubiquitous. We see
them so often that it doesn't attract people's attention." NOW's
Jenny Thalheimer said "these Madison Avenue companies
are under the gun. To even out their disparagement of women,
they have to take on the men now and then."
These
comments reflect NOW's oft-voiced view that popular culture
is sexist against women, but that the patriarchy is so
pervasive that when we have the rare ad that depicts men
unfavorably all of a sudden there's a protest. One of NOW's
top two national leaders was scheduled to debate me on
this issue last week on a major network and canceled. Evidently
the leaders of the largest and most well-funded feminist
organization in the world, which bullies legislatures and
intimidates major corporations, are afraid of debating
the fatherhood movement.
Susan
Lee of the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board
criticized me on PBS, says that I am "working with
a really outmoded notion of patriarchy and demonstrating
extreme paranoia" and that "really the problem
is a radical lack of sense of humor." Tony Snow of
Fox also accused me of not having a sense of humor. This
complaint was often thrown at me during the His
Side Campaign Against 'Boys are Stupid' Products earlier
this year. I addressed this issue in the first
segment of Sunday's show.
Several
listeners have contacted me regarding a website which is
selling a book which tells noncustodial parents how they
can supposedly legally eliminate all child support obligations.
I suppose it is similar to those organizations which claim
citizens can avoid paying any taxes. The page was designed
to look as if the book is my product or comes with my endorsement.
In reality, I have nothing to do with this product and
know nothing about it.
That's
twice in the past month--in October, a letter from a fictitious
individual, who claimed to know me, went out to most fathers'
groups e-lists and to MensNewsDaily.com. The letter accused
me of various unlikely things.
Scott
Peterson's conviction is sure to create more of the "fathers
as monsters" poison in the media that we were hearing
over the summer--as an antidote, read my column 'Fatal
Fathers' Myth Promoted in Wake of Peterson, Hacking Cases (Daily
Breeze [Los Angeles], 9/17/04).
As
many of you know, Veterans' Day is November 11 because
that is the day that the most terrible war in history (to
that point) ended--World War I. It always reminds me of
my grandfather, a decorated World War I veteran--see my
column Dr.
Helen Caldicott Spits on My Grandfather (Cybercast
News Service, 3/28/03).
