Cox Pulls Billboard Campaign In Face of Protests!

Michigan
Attorney General Mike Cox has wisely decided to pull his
billboard contest wherein children would draw designs critical
of noncustodial fathers who have allegedly not paid child
support. The battle between Cox and fatherhood advocates
has garnered a lot of media attention--click here for
the latest.
Cox announced
in September that his contest "encourages parent involvement
in discussing the issue and assisting in crafting the message
and visual representation... that clearly conveys the message
of encouraging the payment of child support."
As I noted,
in this campaign "custodial mothers are encouraged to coach
their children to make designs critical of noncustodial
parents behind on child support. And it doesn't take much
imagination to figure out which noncustodial father many
mothers will be encouraging their children to denounce."
In fact,
many divorce decrees specifically instruct parents not
to denigrate or badmouth the other parent in the presence
of the children. It is very inappropriate for the top law
enforcement official in the state of Michigan to hold a
contest which encourages parents to do this, and I am glad
that Mike Cox understands the problem and has responded
appropriately.

Ex-ABA Leader Slams Shared Custody, Fathers' Movement
This week in newspapers all over the
country high profile family law attorney Lynne
Gold-Bikin, former chair of the American Bar Association's
family law section, slammed shared custody and fathers'
activists. According to Bikin, a recent federal
class action suit filed on behalf of noncustodial parents
is:
"One more attempt to say that every case
that goes into court should start with the assumption that
it's 50-50 time -- even if they haven't been putting in
50-50 time before that. And why do they want 50-50 custody?
Some people want it because they know they can reduce the
support they pay to their wives."
